  • Danny Drinkwater’s fall from grace continued on Monday night after the Chelsea outcast was sent off for kicking out at Tottenham’s teenage midfielder Alfie Devine in a Under 23s game at Kingsmeadow.

The 30-year-old, who joined the Blues in a £35million deal from Leicester City in 2017, has not made a senior appearance since March 2018 and is now maintaining his fitness with the club’s academy players.

In a clash against the club’s fierce London rivals Spurs, Drinkwater helped the young side fight back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 before setting a poor example to the Blues youngsters in the U23s side.

After being on the end of a nasty-looking two footed tackle from Devine, Drinkwater immediately reacted by swinging his a leg at the back of the 16-year-old Tottenham midfielder to spark a mass brawl on the pitch between the two sets of players.

After things had calmed down, both Devine and Drinkwater were shown red cards for the outburst, compiling yet more misery for the Chelsea man in what has been a disastrous move from the Foxes.

Drinkwater’s antics will make the headlines for all the wrong reasons on a night where Petr Cech made a shock return to feature in goal for the Blues.

The veteran midfielder had two unsuccessful loan spells at Burnley and Aston Villa last season before being told that he would not feature in Frank Lampard’s squad going forward.

Tottenham took the lead through Jubril Okedina and Dane Scarlett in the first half before Chelsea roared back in the second thanks to goals from Myles Peart-Harris, Marcel Lewis and then an 88th-minute winner from Peart-Harris to complete the comeback.

Drinkwater has severely struggled to make an impact at Stamford Bridge since making his big-money move three years ago and failed to secure a loan move away from the club in the summer.
