Chelsea fans have joked that Raheem Sterling has ruined their Christmas after he missed a glorious three-on-one chance during their defeat at Wolves.

The forward has made a career out of being one of the Premier League’s most effective attacking stars, but his poor judgement proved costly as the Blues suffered a 2-1 defeat at Molineux on Christmas Eve.

Dispossessing Joao Gomes in his own half, Sterling had a clear run at the Wolves goal and was joined by Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson, giving the Blues a three vs one situation in their favour.

But as Sterling approached the penalty area, he opted to shoot at goal rather than passing to a teammate, allowing Jose Sa to make a save to keep the game goalless.

Had he chosen to pass to Palmer or Broja, Chelsea would have almost certainly taken a 1-0 lead at half-time.

These mistakes happen in football and so Sterling’s blunder shouldn’t be treated with too much vitriol, but taking to social media, some Chelsea fans have joked that the 29-year-old has spoiled Christmas.

One fan wrote: “Sterling ruined Christmas.”

Another said: “Mudryk on for Sterling immediately, Christmas is ruined!”

A third commented: “Somebody tell Sterling Christmas is a season of giving. Pass it.”

“3 on 1 and Sterling missed, Merry Christmas,” added another supporter.

Meanwhile a final supporter wrote: “Sterling’s wife better be emptying his stocking right now cause that guy don’t deserve nothing for Christmas.”

Sterling’s miss meant that the scores remained 0-0 at half-time and it’s one that they would rue to miss as they suffered their fourth away defeat in a row.

Mario Lemina headed the home side in front early in the second half before Matt Doherty slotted Wolves 2-0 up from close range.

Christopher Nkunku scored on his Premier League debut in stoppage time, however, it would only prove to be a consolation with big-spending Chelsea Christmas in tenth spot.
