Chelsea all over again? Thomas Tuchel gets Todd Boehly-style dressing room visit from Bayern Munich chiefs who face calls to resign over hiring him

You can take the Thomas Tuchel out of Chelsea, but you can’t take the Chelsea out of Thomas Tuchel.

That was very much the case for the former Blues manager as yet another defeat at Bayern Munich saw his dressing room interrupted by his bosses.

Falling 3-1 away at Mainz on Saturday, Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn, sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic and chairman Herbert Hainer were all seen walking into Tuchel’s dressing room in the aftermath.

The scenes were hugely reminiscent of Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly’s actions after his side lost 2-1 to Brighton at Stamford Bridge.

The American businessman was seen walking across the pitch to the tunnel, where he then reportedly spent an hour in conversation with the Chelsea playing staff.

Boehly was roundly criticised for his interference, and that will likely be the case for Bayern’s management team who have also made a number of big calls that have proved to be catastrophic.

Salihamidzic’s failure to make Robert Lewandowski feel wanted is cited as the main reason the Pole left for Barcelona, with his replacement, ex-Liverpool forward Sadio Mane, so far struggling to settle in Germany.

Counteracting the star signing’s lack of form was some wizardry from manager Julian Nagelsmann, who instead made Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting his focal point in attack.

That had Bayern competing on all fronts for a historic treble but, despite a perfect Champions League record, he was sacked for being neck-and-neck with Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga.

Since that decision, Tuchel has just two wins in seven matches, with a four-game winless run Bayern’s longest since 2018.

The former Chelsea boss has also seen his side crash out of the DFB Pokal to Freiburg, before being swatted away in Europe by Manchester City.

He also now has three defeats to his name in seven games, matching the total Nagelsmann managed in 37 games in charge.

Despite the incredibly questionable management decision, Kahn opted to blame the players, although he’s now having to directly answer if his job is at risk.

“We played a catastrophic second half,” the former goalkeeper said. “Who was the team here that wanted to become German champions?

“It will be very difficult to become champions with such an appearance.

“There are 11 men who are on the pitch and who have to work their asses off for the goals of this club. What the team brought to the pitch is not enough to win the title.”

Asked if he would resign, Kahn responded: “My only goal is to bring an end to the season with the league title – and then really attack again in the new season.”
