Chelsea 2 Wolves 4: Blues hit new low after throwing away lead before Cunha bags hat-trick in Stamford Bridge thrashing

CHELSEA lost at home to Wolves for the first time in more than 44 years as their season took another dramatic downward tumble.

Mauricio Pochettino’s team was booed off at half-time and full-time as the fans lost patience with the feeble display from their £1billion squad.

Wolves supporters taunted the Chelsea head coach with chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” as pressure mounts on the Argentine.

And after Matheus Cunha thumped home in the 82nd minute and sealed his hat-trick, the remaining Blues fans still left inside Stamford Bridge joined in as they turned on their own manager in anger.

While his position is in jeopardy, with the Wembley Carabao Cup later this month against Liverpool, it is unlikely he will get the boot before then.

Although with Chelsea’s owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali having already sacked two managers since buying the club for more than £4bn in 2022, there are no guarantees.

There is no denying this was one of the most abject displays of an already erratic campaign in which the most costly squad in British football history spectacularly underperformed.

To make matters worse, they even took the lead only to throw it away inside three minutes before suffering a remarkable collapse.

Cole Palmer fired them ahead on 19 minutes.

Cunha replied with the first of his three on 22 minutes following a mistake by £115million midfielder Moises Caicedo, who lost possession.

Cunha’s shot took a huge deflection off defender Thiago Silva to leave Chelsea keeper Djordje Petrovic wrong-footed.

Wolves went ahead just before half-time when more lapse defending left the home side exposed which led to Axel Disasi scoring an own goal from Rayan Ait-Nouri’s shot.

And in the 63rd minute, Chelsea were again painfully exposed when Pedro Netro raced down the wing and cut the ball back for Cunha to drive a rising shot in from 15 yards.

With just eight minutes left, full-back Malo Gusto scythed down Cunha and he got up to score from the spot.

Silva scored a consolation for Chelsea with four minutes left but the home form which has been carrying the team during an erratic season has now deserted them too.

This was their first defeat at Stamford Bridge in 11 games – since losing to Brentford on October 28.

Chelsea last lost at home to Wolves in May 1979 in the old Division One.

They slip into the bottom half of the table after this defeat with Wolves moving above them into tenth place.
