Charles may break 200-year-old Palace tradition when he becomes King, experts claim

LONG MAY HE REIGN #LONGMAYHEREIGN

Prince Charles may decided to snub Buckingham Palace and stay where he is when he becomes king, breaking with a 200-year tradition, experts claim.

While the official residence of the sovereign is London’s Buckingham Palace, royal experts have cast doubt on whether Prince Charles, who is first-in-line to the throne, will give up Clarence House.

There is also speculation that he would want to stay where he’s been for almost 20 years, while his son William is unlikely to want uproot his whole family from Kensington Palace.

Buckingham Palace has been the seat of the monarchy since 1837, including all 69 years of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, GloucestershireLive reports.

While the Queen has been staying at Windsor Castle during the pandemic and following the death of her husband Prince Philip, it’s understood she will eventually return to the Palace at least on a part-time basis.

The Express.co.uk quoted royal expert Christopher Warwick saying on True Royalty TV: “I can’t help thinking that Charles may not come to the throne for another five to six years.

“Will he really in his late 70s want to up sticks from Clarence House to Buckingham Palace?”

The Sunday Times royal correspondent Roya Nikkhah said while the “official line” is that he will move to Buckingham, the palace will only be used as his office while he will carry on living in Highgrove.

She went on: “The official line is that the Cambridges will one day move to the Palace when they become King and Queen.

“I imagine that it will still be monarchy HQ and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Cambridges stayed in Kensington Palace.”

Charles is said to be planning for a slimmed down monarchy when he takes the throne, which reportedly will only include seven senior royals – not including Prince Harry, Meghan Markle or Prince Andrew.

Royal author Angela Levin told talkRADIO : “Prince Charles has wanted for a very long time to cut the monarchy down to save costs and to make people be worth the money that they got from the taxpayer.

“I imagine that might be when Harry and Meghan are ditched from being members of the Royal family.

“I think the outer edge, which the Queen has wanted to keep together for a very long time for sentimental reasons, which at her age she didn’t really particularly want change which I think is understandable.

“But he wants to change and I think he will do that.”

Comments about Harry and Meghan not being part of Charles’ picture of a future monarchy come after the Sussexes dramatically announced last year that they would be quitting as senior royals to pursue a life of their own in the US.

The couple are now expecting their second child as they live in a £11m mansion in St Barbara, California, with son Archie, two.
