The Los Angeles Chargers released wide receiver Mike Williams and restructured the contract of edge rusher Khalil Mack on Wednesday, just hours before the start of the 2024 NFL league year at 4 p.m. ET.

The release of Williams saves the Chargers $20 million in cap space and makes them compliant with the salary cap, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

From a functional standpoint, however, Williams will be the first of many moves by the Chargers in the coming days. Los Angeles waived offensive lineman Andrew Trainer and defensive back Amechi Uzodinma on Tuesday to ensure it would only have to release Williams ahead of the new league year.

Edge rusher Joey Bosa and wide receiver Keenan Allen are next on the list of high-profile Chargers who could be traded, released or have their contract reworked. Mack’s restructuring leaves open the possibility that Bosa is traded or released.
