Celtic victims of major injustice as unseen Kyogo Furuhashi footage emerges – pundit

Alan Hutton has suggested Celtic were unfortunate not to receive a penalty against St Johnstone for an incident not picked up by the referee.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Rangers defender criticised the inconsistency of VAR.

As seen in footage shared by the SPFL (30 January), Kyogo Furuhashi appears to be dragged down in the box by Dundee United’s Scott McMann as he chases a loose ball.

Referee Don Robertson allowed play to continue and VAR official Euan Anderson did not feel the incident needed to be re-examined.

Minutes later the Hoops had another shout for a penalty for another challenge on Kyogo by goalkeeper Mark Birighitti and although initially given, it was overturned.

When asked for his assessment of the first challenge on Kyogo, Hutton told Football Insider: “I think as a defender, whenever you pull a forward player in the box like that, you run the risk.

“He quite clearly has a hold of his top and is dragging him away. I think it is something that if the referee has missed, that is why VAR are there.

“If it is an obvious error then they can go and look back at it. I did not see that incident at the time so if VAR did not even look, this is the inconsistency we are talking about.

“You can quite clearly see that the grab affects him and he falls over. Therefore if it is in the box there is a massive chance of giving away a penalty.“
