Rangers fans are raging. The rest are rolling about laughing at them. And if Scotland’s co-deficient is taking a hammering, who cares, as long as your rivals are suffering?
That was the vibe on the Hotline anyway, in the wake of Rangers’ hammering at the hands of Liverpool. James Brown was feelin’ good. He emailed: “ Rangers shouldn’t feel too bad about being totally embarrassed by Liverpool’s ‘B’ Team in Govan. After all they were only six penalties away from getting a draw.”
Bud Hay, Dumfries, emailed: “Had to laugh at Kris Boyd when Rangers went up 1-0- you would have thought he had won the Champions League. He then said Rangers were in the game for 60 mins against the second best team in England. Dream on. This is what happens when you are in the big boys playground.” While Richard Wharton, Carlisle, said: “They said this was Rangers’ big chance. “Liverpool were short of confidence, had injury problems and would be saving the big names for Saturday. True to form, Liverpool were awful…….they let Rangers score!”
Andy Logan emailed: “I’m sure Stewart Jackson, Jake Curley and many others wish Rangers only played for 45 minutes last night. As Ibrox legend Ally McCoist said, it was the worst EVER defeat in Europe for a Scottish team. No new songs needed just ssssshhhhh!”
Tommy McLean, Dunblane, said: “I’m a Bear with a sore head, I was fortunate to be at Ibrox on one of Rangers greatest European nights, The Battle of Britain against Leeds in 1992 when Rangers rightly were looked upon as a real Champions League side. Rangers have no kudos left in Europe after this hammering by Liverpool. Yes we’ll be back in Europe next year but every other side will want to get a head start by being drawn against Rangers. It’s going to take a long time for Rangers to get over this humiliation.”
Ally Ross reckons the man marks were as bad as the man marking at Ibrox. He said: “No wonder Scottish football’s in the toilet if your writer is giving six of the Rangers line up marks of six or more out of 10. Get real. They can’t even pass the ball properly. Not one of them.”
George Fairgrieve , emailed: “There’s been talk out there of sell out stadiums ‘rocking or jumping’ under the floodlights with the misguided belief this scenario can win games. Wrong, Ibrox was indeed ‘rocking’ however, as with Hearts, the team wasn’t and it’s the team that wins the games.”
Dr Robert Pender said: “Alarm bells rang out as the Liverpool team did a sharp warm up before the start of the second half. It was like a light switch being put on and Liverpool took off.”
C. Strachan emailed: “Ryan Kent is playing as if he is already away. Rangers can’t keep playing him. He is totally overrated, has the odd good spell in games but switches off too often during games. Always too late to react to his markers when they pick up the ball or make their runs. Costs more goals than he scores due to his lack of awareness.”
Frank McFerran, Carrickfergus, said: “As a Rangers fan I am absolutely disgusted at what happened at Ibrox 1-7 against a depleted Liverpool side, shows how far we’ve fallen.”
Wullie Graham, Bristol, said: “All of those Old Firm fans who said recently on the Hotline that only they should represent Scotland in Europe must be wishing they had kept quiet now. I said a few weeks ago there was more pain to come after the first couple of games. Eight games between them and one point to show for it, and being outclassed is as embarrassing as it gets.”
Paddy Gowans said: “Rangers couldn’t beat a reserve team in the first half. Bringing on the big guns, Liverpool turned it into a training session. The massive gap in class is clear to see – as is the fact that the Europa League is the Old Firm’s level.”
Drew Ferguson, Oban , said: “It’s clear now that Rangers and Celtic do not have the quality and finance to compete with the elite level of football in Europe. They may be massive clubs in world football but Europa League is their level and will not change unless there is a massive injection of finance like England, Germany, Italy, France and Spain receives.”
But Jimmy Murray, Edinburgh, said: “Before Rangers or Celtic start whining again about the other teams being able to spend millions, take a look at the Club Brugge results.”
