SANDUSKY, OH — A popular, but problematic roller coaster at Cedar Point has been retired by the company a year after it was closed following an incident involving a guest. Cedar Point announced Tuesday through various social media platforms that the “Top Thrill Dragster” will not reopen and is now officially retired.

The company debuted the ride in 2003 and over the course of the 19 years it had more than 18 million riders according to Cedar Point. Top Thrill Dragster featured a 420-foot-high hill and cars that reached a top speed of 120 mph.

The ride closed in August 2021 after a woman from the Flint area was injured when an L-shaped bracket fell from the coaster and struck her in the head. The woman was waiting in line to board the coaster when the piece hit her.

The company had previously announced the ride would be closed for 2022.

As part of the retirement announcement, the company hinted that the ride may return in a new form as the release says the team is working to create a “new and reimagined ride experience” and that further details will be released at a later date.
