Cause of fire at Almonte paramedic base still unknown, says chief

Nearly two months after fire ripped through Lanark County Paramedic Service’s (LCPS) Almonte base, its cause remains unknown.

The station, located at 75 Spring St., sustained significant damage in the March 31 fire, which was battled by Mississippi Mills and Carleton Place fire departments. There were no injuries or damage to equipment, but LCPS Chief Travis Mellema said the service is still in a holding pattern.

“We’re waiting on the structural engineer’s report and the Office of the Fire Marshal report,” he told this newspaper on May 10. “The cause is still being investigated.”

On April 6, Mike Williams, fire chief and director of protective services, confirmed the Office of the Fire Marshal had completed its investigation of the scene on April 3.

Since the fire, paramedics have found a temporary home at Mississippi Mills Fire Department’s Station 1 in Almonte.

“We’re grateful, absolutely, for the space,” Mellema said. “(The Municipality of Mississippi Mills) has been very generous and very accommodating.”

The two-bay brick Almonte station opened in October 2009. It’s one of five stations LCPS, operated by the Almonte General Hospital, works out of across Lanark County.
