Catch A Wave is Eureka favourite after all-the-way Miracle Mile win

Catch A Wave #CatchAWave

Only two weeks ago, Catch A Wave was a support act for harness racing’s biggest story, but he is now the leading star heading to the Eureka later in the year after becoming only the second horse to complete the Chariots Of Fire-Miracle Mile double at Menangle.

The Captaintreacherous four-year-old took control of Saturday night’s Miracle Mile with daring tactics and simply gave nothing else a chance.

Cathc A Wave leads all the way to win the Miracle Mile at Menangle on Saturday night.

“I didn’t know if I could get the lead from Spirit Of St Louis, but I was there to take it,” driver Kate Gath said. “Once he got there, he came back beautifully and once we got a slow quarter I knew what he could do.

“He has always had that sort of talent but he is now showing it.

“He can probably go quicker if he has to and he is just going to get better.”

Andy and Kate Gath have always believed they had maybe their best-ever horse in Catch A Wave, but he’s had triple Derby winner Leap To Fame and Captain Ravishing in front of him in his age group.

But he will be favourite for the world’s richest race, the Eureka, in September after a devastating two weeks where he joined Have Faith in Me winning Menangle’s big double, running 1.48.4 to win the Miracle Mile.

Catch A Wave went a 25.5-second opening quarter but backed it off to 29.2 in the second quarter, where he won the race, before winding it up with 27.9 and ran home in 26.3 seconds.

Spirit Of St Louis, who tracked the winner all the way, came off Catch A Wave’s back but could only get within three metres, with favourite Honolua Bay a head away in third.
