A 2 p.m. news conference is scheduled today in London, Ontario, to address sexual assault charges filed against five hockey players.

The alleged assault occurred in 2018 when the players were on Canada’s world junior hockey team.

The five players – Philadelphia Flyers goalie Carter Hart; Michael McLeod and Cal Foote of the New Jersey Devils; Calgary Flames’ Dillon Dube; and Alex Formenton, a former NHL player who is now playing in Sweden – have been charged. Attorneys representing the men took part in a video hearing this morning, with another hearing is set for April 30.

All five of the players, through their lawyers, said they are not guilty.

According to USA Today, London police began investigating in 2022 after it was disclosed that Hockey Canada had settled a lawsuit with a woman who said she was sexually assaulted by eight members of that gold medal team in London.

Then the NHL began investigating. Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly recently said the league would issue a statement if and when it is appropriate.

Nothing was said this weekend, when the NHL held its All-Star weekend.
