Carlton Blues forward Jack Martin to face scrutiny for hit on Sydney Swans’ Nick Blakey in elimination final

Just 24 hours after Melbourne’s Angus Brayshaw was concussed in a sickening incident, the AFL faces another match review controversy.

Carlton forward Jack Martin is in danger of missing games in the club’s historic return to finals after hitting Sydney defender Nick Blakey with a round arm early in the elimination final at the MCG.

Blakey was slow to return to his feet and spent the remainder of the first quarter on the bench, undergoing a head injury assessment.

He passed the HIA and returned to the ground for the start of the second quarter.

“He’s hit him high and he’s got a clenched fist, so there’s no doubt it will be looked at,” Richmond legend Matthew Richardson said on Seven.

That incident comes the night after Brayshaw’s concussion rocked the football world, while Collingwood enforcer Brayden Maynard was sent directly to the tribunal on Friday night.

It means he will either be available to play in the club’s preliminary final in a fortnight’s time or will miss at least three weeks — a move that would rule him out of a grand final, should Collingwood make it.

Brayshaw was kicking forward from a centre-bounce as Maynard approached him, the Magpies defender turning his shoulder towards the Demon as he flew towards him in the air.

West Australian forward Jacob van Rooyen will miss the Demons’ must-win semifinal clash, handed a one-week ban for an elbow to the face of Dan McStay just minutes after the Maynard incident.
