Carlo Ancelotti insists ‘no doubts’ over Real Madrid future despite Champions League defeat

Carlo Ancelotti insisted he would continue as Real Madrid boss next season, despite admitting his side were well beaten by Manchester City in their Champions League semi-final decider.

City outclassed the reigning champions and 14-time winners at the Etihad, with goals from Bernardo Silva (2), Manuel Akanji and Julian Alvarez sealing a 4-0 win on the night and a 5-1 aggregate victory.

Ancelotti is a target for Brazil but his current deal at the Bernabeu runs for another year and Real president Florentino Perez shrugged off links before the tie, insisting he was “very happy” with Ancelotti.

The Italian’s future came back under the spotlight after Wednesday’s heavy defeat but asked if there were any doubts he would stay on, he said: “Nobody doubts. The president was quite clear 15 days ago (in public). Nobody has any doubts.”

Pushed on whether the president had told him privately that he would continue, he added: “What the president has told me privately I’m not going to say here.”

Ancelotti watched his side mount a stunning comeback to scupper City last season, but gave a frank assessment of his side’s second-leg display this time around.

“We played against an opponent who deserved to win tonight because they played with more intensity and quality,” he said.

“In the first half they built a game to reach the final. They were superior today and we were superior last year. This can happen to you in a Champions League semi-final. I don’t want to talk about attitude. They were better than us.”

Real beat Osasuna earlier this month to win the Copa del Rey, but lost out to Barcelona in La Liga.

“It’s been a good season, hopefully we can finish it well,” Ancelotti said.

“Reaching a Champions League semi-final is a success, only four do it. This squad beat City in the semi-final last year, this year they were better than us.”
