The Seattle Seahawks are extending Geno Smith, meaning the Arizona Cardinals should get used to seeing him.
If you’re an Arizona Cardinals fan, the Seattle Seahawks are likely at the bottom of teams you’d like to see have success in 2023.
Even their 2022 run after trading Russell Wilson and promoting Geno Smith as the starter showed promise that perhaps the Seahawks aren’t as far away as some believe in turning things around.
Seattle is ensuring Smith remains with the team, as the organization and Smith agreed to a three-year contract extension according to various reports. He’s receiving a contract “with the ability to earn $52 million in the first calendar year” according to The Score’s Jordan Schultz.
Ian Rapoport is reporting Smith is on a three-year deal worth $105 million.
Smith was a candidate to be franchise tagged ahead of the Tuesday tag deadline. The tag cost for a 2023 QB would have been $32.4 million according to OverTheCap.com.
Smith completed 69.8% of passes (league leader) for 4,282 yards and 30 TD to 11 INT. He also added 366 yards rushing with one score on the ground as well.
Arizona was swept by Seattle last year.
The Cardinals hope to reverse their 4-13 fortunes with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. The Seahawks (who are picking at No. 5 thanks to the Wilson trade with Denver) are also in the top five and hope to land a franchise player.
We’ll see if new head coach Jonathan Gannon has a better gameplan for Smith and the Seahawks’ offense.
