Canelo Álvarez vs. Jaime Munguía Finalize May 4 Super Middleweight Title Fight

Alvarez #Alvarez

Jaime Munguia has earned the distinction of being Canelo Álvarez’s opponent for Alvarez’s annual Cinco de Mayo weekend bout.

Álvarez and Munguía have agreed to fight for the undisputed super middleweight championship on May 4 in Las Vegas. ESPN’s Mike Coppinger first reported the two sides were finalizing an agreement.

Álvarez worked with Premier Boxing Champions to put together the bout after the two sides parted ways in February. They ended their agreement with two fights remaining on a three-fight deal that was signed in June 2023.

This will be the first time Álvarez has fought since his unanimous decision win over Jermell Charlo on Sept. 30 to retain the undisputed middleweight title.

Coppinger reported at the time of the split that the deal called for Álvarez to fight Jermall Charlo, Jermell’s brother, on May 4, but they couldn’t agree to terms for the bout, allowing Canelo to explore other options.

The bout between Álvarez and Munguía is considered a “one-fight deal” with PBC, according to Coppinger. The report also noted both Prime Video, which has an agreement with PBC, and DAZN, which has an exclusive deal with Golden Boy Promotions, will both offer the bout on pay-per-view.

“Munguía’s past 12 fights were streamed by DAZN,” Coppinger wrote. “The 27-year-old Mexican fighter has been co-promoted by Zanfer and Golden Boy.”

Álvarez has a 60-2-2 record in 64 career fights. He’s won three straight bouts since losing to Dmitry Bivol for the WBA light heavyweight championship in May 2022.

Munguía is 43-0 with 34 knockouts in his professional career. This will be his second fight of the year after defeating John Ryder via ninth-round TKO to retain the WBC Silver super middleweight crown on Jan. 27.

This will mark the fourth straight year and 10th time in his career that Álvarez will be competing on the weekend of Cinco de Mayo. He is 8-1 in the previous nine bouts, with his lone defeat coming against Bivol.
