Canelo Alvarez belittled and ignored by Dmitry Bivol

Russian light-heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol said in an interview that he would rather go for another world championship belt than think about a rematch against Mexican boxer Canelo Alvarez.

“We can talk about a rematch with Canelo, there is no problem, although the truth is, I prefer to fight for another belt,” said Bivol in an interview with journalist Steve Kim.

Preferring unification against Beterbiev

The Russian prefers to unify the light-heavyweight title against his countryman Artur Beterbiev, who holds the IBF, WBO and WBA belts.

“The belts are more important than the money, with them (the belts) I can make more money. If I thought only about the money, I wouldn’t be here,” explained the Russian.

But Bivol will have to wait for now, as Berterbiev will fight Anthony Yarde in the last days of January.

“It’s not about the name, now it’s Beterbiev, but later it can be Yarde,” said Bivol, “I’m interested in fighting for a new championship. It’s no secret that my dream is to be undisputed.”

On November 5, Bivol held the last defence of his title against Gilberto Zurdo Ramirez, whom he defeated by unanimous decision.

Beterbiev has also been named on the list of possible opponents for Canelo Alvarez, although like Bivol, he will have to wait for his result in the Yarde fight.

The Beterbiev has a perfect record of 18 fights and 18 wins, all of which have been by knockout.

Canelo’s other possibility

Britain’s John Ryder is one of Canelo Alvarez’s possible future opponents after winning the WBO super-middleweight title by easily defeating Zach Parker in just four rounds, and hopes to face him in May 2023.
