Canadiens acquire defenseman Joel Edmundson from the Hurricanes

MONTREAL – Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin announced today that the team has acquired defenseman Joel Edmundson from the Carolina Hurricanes, in return for a fifth-round pick in 2020. Edmundson is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the current Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Edmundson, 27, suited up for 68 games with Carolina last season, recording seven goals and 13 assists in addition to posting a +7 differential. The 6’04” and 216 lbs left-handed defenseman also served 72 penalty minutes. He added one goal in four playoff contests with the Hurricanes this year.
In five seasons in the National Hockey League with the St. Louis Blues and the Hurricanes, Edmundson amassed 72 points (20 goals, 52 assists) in 337 regular season games while serving 320 penalty minutes and posting a + 25 differential. He has 15 points (six goals, nine assists) in 53 playoff games, notably helping the St. Louis Blues hoist the Stanley Cup at the end of the 2018-19 season.
Before making the jump to the NHL, Edmundson played three seasons in the AHL for the Chicago Wolves. The Brandon, MB native defenseman played 110 combined regular season and playoff games with Chicago, recording 10 goals and 12 assists. Edmundson completed a three-season stint in the WHL with the Moose Jaw Warriors and Kamloops Blazers. He concluded his Junior career with 68 points (15 goals, 53 assists) in 190 games. He added 13 points (six goals, seven assists) in 35 playoff games.
Edmundson was a second-round pick, 46th overall for the Blues in the 2011 NHL Draft.
