Canadians shocked at price of deodorant at Shoppers Drug Mart: ‘Not worth the price at all’

Canadian shoppers are once again shocked at eyebrow-raising prices of an everyday item at Shoppers Drug Mart — this time a deodorant stick going for $21.

The photo — posted to the popular Reddit thread Loblaws Is Out of Control — has garnered nearly 200 comments. It shows several racks that feature different brands of deodorants, some of which are on sale for $9.99. Above the sale items is a display for 75-gram Native deodorants in different scents, with a price tag of $20.99. It’s a “natural” product, which means it is free of aluminum and parabens.

Canada inflation: Shoppers shocked at price of deodorant at Shoppers Drug Mart.

Native is an American brand of natural body products. Their lines include shampoos, moisturizers and sunscreens.

Some Redditors said the product is considered upscale, so the price is justified, while others could not consider paying $21 for it.

“Native is just an extremely expensive brand overall,” hauntchalant wrote.

“It’s the brand,” Professional-Cry8310 wrote. “It’s decent stuff but not worth the price at all.”

Others said they use the product because unlike others it does not trigger an allergic reaction, so the price is worth it to them.

“It’s the only deodorant I’ve ever found that doesn’t give me a rash and actually makes me not stink,” Justagirleatingcake wrote.

“I use the sensitive version and it works great for me. I just wait for a sale,” Tall-Yogurtcloset-74 added.

Others in the thread remarked that the “cheaper” brands, like Secret, were also overpriced.

“Paying $10.99 for Secret deodorant is just freaking ridiculous,” quietbright wrote.

“Secret deodorant at 11$ is the real crime here,” pattyG80 added.

Other shoppers shared that the same Native deodorant is being sold for a few dollars less at other stores.

At Walmart, the coconut and vanilla scented deodorant was priced at $16.97, while Well.ca was selling the same product for $17.09. Meanwhile, the Real Canadian Superstore was selling it for $17.99. The deodorant could also be bought directly from the brand’s site, which was selling it for the equivalent of $17.55 CAD, not including shipping.

Shoppers Drug Mart is no stranger to criticism for its eye-popping prices.

The Reddit thread “Loblaws Is Out of Control,” which boast 24,000 members, routinely features pricing on products from Loblaw-owned stores, like Shoppers Drug Mart, Loblaws, Real Canadian Superstore, Your Independent Grocer and Zehrs, that Canadian shoppers call out as exorbitant.

Over the last few months, users on Reddit have called out major grocery chains for selling $16 watermelons and a $40 pack of chicken breasts. They’ve also reminisced on a blast-from-the-past post featuring a flyer from the year 2000 from a Zehrs market, that shows most items have almost doubled in price since then.
