Canada Day 2022: What’s happening in Peterborough County

All eight townships in Peterborough County are planning in-person Canada Day celebrations for Friday.

In Trent Lakes, the Buckhorn Community Centre will be open rain or shine from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a magic show, games of skill, Lego-building activities and pony cart rides.

A giant kids’ clubhouse will be on site, along with farm animals from Wooly Wonderland Farm. Guests will be able to a beer garden and barbecue, along with a marketplace featuring crafts and garage sale items.

The Trent Lakes Fire Rescue will also be on site and there will be entertainment by Lucas Stark, the Mystery Entertainer, and the Buckhorn Jammers.

Dogs aren’t allowed.

In Selwyn Township, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 77 in Lakefield is inviting community members to kick off Canada Day celebrations with a barbecue and live music from the Greg Hannah Band at 12:30 p.m. There will also be a share-the-wealth draw at 4 p.m.

Otonabee-South Monaghan Township is hosting the Keene Canada Day parade and celebration. The parade starts at 10 a.m. at North Shore Public School and wraps up at the Keene fire station. Awards will be doled out in a number of parade entry categories.

The Apsley and District Lions Club parade begins at 4 p.m. at Apsley Public School, ending at the Lions Park where festivities continue until 6 p.m. with games, the Lions’ food booth, and more events.

At dusk, the fireworks begin.

With the theme “Reunited,” the Douro parade begins at 2:30 p.m. starting at County 4 and the 4th Line of Dummer, and proceeding to County Road 8, rain or shine.

Asphodel-Norwood Township has a full day of events planned for the big day at the Asphodel-Norwood Community Centre.

There will be a Lions Club barbecue from 2:30 to 7 p.m. Opening ceremonies take place at 3 p.m. followed by a bicycle parade at 3:30 p.m., a dunk tank, pickup ball hockey, live music, a fire truck pull by Asphodel-Norwood Fire and Rescue and fireworks at dusk. Canada Day crafts, cupcake decorating, lawn games, a bouncy castle and obstacle course will also be part of the fun.

There’s still time (until Wednesday) for township citizens to join the Canada Day home decorating challenge.

Participants will have a photo of their creation added to an album, which will be released July 1. Make sure to register and your name will be entered into a draw for a $100 gift card for a local business of your choice.

Cavan Monaghan Township will be welcoming its residents to the Cavan Monaghan Community Centre from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to celebrate its heritage on Canada Day with a bouncy castle, lacrosse clinic, beach volleyball, barbecue, cake, crafts, a DJ and a bike raffle.

The Lions Club of Havelock will be hosting some fun events on July 1 and the Canada Day Long Weekend.

The parade lineup is on Oak Street by the municipal office by 10:30 a.m. Judging begins at 10:40 a.m. The parade will depart at 11 a.m. and end at the arena grounds. Children are encouraged to decorate their bikes or other vehicles and join the parade.

There will be a Lions Club barbecue at the Centre at noon and free rolling skating from 1 to 3 p.m.

In Havelock, a fireworks display will kick off at dusk. Guests are asked to park along Highway 7. There will also be fireworks at the Cordova Fire Hall on Saturday at dusk.
