Aston Villa striker Cameron Archer has admitted he would prefer to remain at the club ahead of the new season, but has stated he would be open to a loan move if necessary.

Archer, 20, secured Villa’s third win of the summer against Brisbane Roar as he came on at half-time and gave Steven Gerrard’s side the lead with just over ten minutes to go. The England U20 striker latched onto a pass from Kaine Kesler Hayden, before swivelling and firing the ball into the back of the net, past Macklin Freke in the Brisbane goal.

It is his second goal in as many games throughout the pre-season preparations, as rumours continue to swirl regarding whether or not Gerrard will keep him around the first team squad or sanction a loan move for the player. Archer enjoyed a successful loan spell in the Championship last season with Preston North End, which saw him score seven goals across 18 starts for Ryan Lowe’s side.

Speaking in an interview with Villa TV, Archer commented on his future where he outlined what Gerrard has told him. He said: “Yeah he [Gerrard] said at the start that he’ll let me know whether I’ll go out on loan or not at the end of the Australia tour.

“So I’m going to try my best to impress him. Obviously I would prefer to play here but if I need to go out on loan to play games, because that’s what young players need, we’ll see.”

Archer went on to talk about his aims for the season ahead, where he said: “I haven’t really thought about that yet! I think I’m the sort of person who just goes as it comes, I don’t really think too much into the future.”
