Cam Newton re-signing with Patriots: Quarterback to return on a one-year deal, per report

Cam Newton #CamNewton

The Cam Newton experiment in New England will continue for at least a little while longer. According to Jim McBride of The Boston Globe, the Patriots are re-signing the veteran quarterback to a one-year deal. The exact figures for this new contract for Newton that’ll keep him in Foxborough for the 2021 season were not immediately disclosed.

Newton signed a one-year deal with the Patriots last summer as the club was searching for a signal-caller to fill the shoes of Tom Brady, who departed the organization in free agency last year by signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Newton eventually earned the starting job prior to the start of the regular season and was also named team captain.

Out of the gate, Newton did perform well, but a spat with COVID-19 seemed to derail him and the club as the season progressed and they missed the postseason for the first time since 2008. Through 15 games played, he completed 65.8% of his passes for 2,657 yards, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions. While the passing attack did not leave much to be desired, Newton showed that he can still be a duel-threat quarterback, rushing for 592 yards and 12 touchdowns.
