Callum Davidson paid a classy tribute to the Brown family as the manager admitted he was left speechless by St Johnstone’s Scottish Cup triumph.

Shaun Rooney’s winner – just as it was in the Betfred Cup final in February – secured a historic Double for the Perth side as they triumphed over Hibs at Hampden.

Davidson has overseen one of the greatest feats in Scottish football history but was keen to single out former chairman Geoff Brown and son Steve, who has taken on his father’s mantle.

The manager, in only his first season at Saints, insists they have built the club “brick by brick” and it’s now culminated in an astonishing success.

“I’m pretty speechless at the moment,” Davidson told Premier Sports. “The players, what they’ve gone through the past few weeks and the effort they’ve put in today.

“They’ve shown their character.

“First-half, Hibs were probably the better team, football-wise. We managed to counter them second-half and get into it.

“First and foremost, I want to thank the Browns.

“Way back in the late 80s, the club was on its knees and Geoff took over. He’s managed to build the club brick by brick with his son and family.

“They’ve managed to get us to this position today. Without their family, without their support for Perth and St Johnstone, we wouldn’t be standing here today.

“First and foremost, a big thanks goes to them. They’ve been magnificent and deserve all the credit. Their family should be proud of them and what they’ve done for St Johnstone.

“I take my hat off to them and say thanks very much.”
