Trevoh Chalobah addressed his new position as Chelsea FC’s right back and has revealed the nickname that club legend Cesar Azpilicueta gave him.

Despite not starting enough games, Chalobah has been a great performer for the Blues, playing out of position and making 30 appearances in all competitions. Coming in and making a difference in a new role is not easy and Chalobah deserves credit for his efforts.

Additionally, he has extended his contract until 2028. With Reece James injured, Chalobah has now been shunted to the right and he has wholly embraced the role.

The 23-year-old has performed so well in that position that Azpilicueta began referring to him as Chelsea’s Cafu. As one of our best players in the last decade, Azpilicueta is the authority of players who are making a difference in Blue.

In his last five starts, the youngster has featured as a right-back and looks to adapt to that position despite poor results. The Englishman also discusses his new position at Chelsea and his thoughts on the nickname Cafu. Speaking to the Chelsea Twitter account, he said:

“Obviously, I’m doing alright at right-back, so Azpi’s been calling me Cafu every day. As you know, it’s different from playing at centre-back, where you’re more central, so Azpi’s been out on that flank. Being in this new role and playing different positions is good for the team, so wherever I’m needed, I’ll try and do my best.”

In James’s absence, Chalobah has done quite well at right-back and is steadily improving in the position. However, that won’t be the case for long once Malo Gusto is here and we will have a natural backup for James in the position.

Meanwhile, as a centre-back, he has played only 18 Premier League matches so far. It will be difficult to see Chalobah playing more regularly in his natural role given the imminent return of Levi Colwill.

For now, Chalobah is making a case for himself to be included in Chelsea’s plans for the future. A versatile defender can help ease concerns with respect to tactical flexibility and could thrive under Mauricio Pochettino.
