Buffalo Bills sign Chicago Bears castoff QB Mitchell Trubisky to back up Josh Allen

Mitchell Trubisky, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft by the Chicago Bears, is getting a second lease on his football life with the Buffalo Bills.

General manager Brandon Beane announced on a Zoom call with reporters Thursday that the Bills have signed Trubisky to a one-year contract to serve as the backup to Josh Allen.

This means the team will not be re-signing Matt Barkley, the backup since midway through the 2018 season.

“What I would say about Mitchell, he was drafted second overall, physically very talented, athletically can do some of the same things that Josh can do with the (run-pass option)s,” Beane said. “I don’t know all that went on in Chicago, but he started 50 games and won 29.

“This is a reset for him. We don’t expect him to be here long term. This is a one year (deal). We hope it’s a great reset for him, making him be the best version of himself in Buffalo and hopefully in a year he can go land a nice starting job.”

Trubisky took a beating in Chicago from media and fans, and much of it was deserved. Yes, his record was 29-21 and he guided the Bears to two playoff appearances (they lost both games).
