Buffalo Bills begin making roster cuts

Game 036 #Game036

The Buffalo Bills have begun their cuts in advance of Tuesday’s 4 p.m. deadline to be at 53 players.

The team announced Sunday afternoon that it had released defensive tackle Cortez Broughton, wide receiver Isaiah Coulter, safety Jared Mayden, tackle Garrett McGhin, wide receiver Dezmon Patmon, tight end Jace Sternberger and linebacker DaShaun White.

The Bills also confirmed they had released defensive end Shane Ray with an injury settlement. Ray injured a hamstring in the second preseason game and was placed on IR last week.

The Bills stand at 83 players following the announcement of Sunday’s transactions.

With only one cutdown date this year from 90 players, instead of three dates, about 1,100 players around the league will flood the market in the next 48 hours or so.

Wide receiver Isaiah Coulter was waived Sunday morning, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Coulter, a fourth-year pro who was on the Bills’ practice squad for part of last season, dealt with a knee injury during training camp and missed about a week of practice.

Tight end Jace Sternberger, who joined the Bills right before training camp, was released, per Pelissero. Sternberger is a former third-round pick of the Green Bay Packers.

A league source told The Buffalo News that offensive tackle Garrett McGhin has been released. McGhin agreed to terms on Aug. 20 after the retirement of Brandon Shell and season-ending injury to Tommy Doyle. McGhin played 10 snaps against Chicago on Saturday.

Defensive tackle Cortez Broughton was released, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. He signed with the Bills’ practice squad in December and remained with the team through the offseason. With the Bills’ depth at the position, there was no room for Broughton.

Mayden had spent two stints with the Bills’ practice squad last season and has been with three other teams in his three seasons.

White, an undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma, signed with the Bills late last week.

Patmon spent his first two-plus seasons with Indianapolis and was signed by the Bills to their practice squad during the playoffs last season.
