Bryce Callahan excited about Broncos’ cornerback additions

When the Denver Broncos brought in three starting-caliber cornerbacks this offseason, Bryce Callahan’s status with the team was put in doubt.
For at least one more season, Callahan seems poised to remain a part of the rotation, but he might not get as much playing time in 2021 as he did in 2020. The 29-year-old cornerback wasn’t worried about his job status when the Broncos brought in Ronald Darby, Kyle Fuller and Patrick Surtain II, though.
“I wouldn’t use the word worried,” Callahan said after practice on June 1. “I was more excited. Having more ballplayers on the field is going to give us all more opportunities to make plays. Obviously, it’s always a competition with your job, but I wasn’t worried. I know it’s a competition and I’m excited to play with those guys out there.”
One of the team’s biggest signings of free agency was the addition of Fuller, a Pro Bowler who played under coach Vic Fangio with the Chicago Bears.
“Kyle is a great cornerback,” Callahan said. “He can lock a No. 1 receiver [up]. We’re getting guys that can play man, but also know how to play zone and work with other guys that know the system.”
After signing Fuller and Darby in free agency, the Broncos used their first-round draft pick to select Surtain. The Alabama product has received great reviews from coaches and teammates this offseason.
“He’s a baller,” Callahan said of Surtain. “Just from what I’ve seen so far, he has great size and he’s a big corner. He’s disciplined in his technique and he’s learning the defense — multiple positions — really fast, which, in this defense, is rare for a rookie. Hats off to him.”
Denver’s deep secondary will probably feature plenty of rotation this fall, and Callahan will probably be willing to trade some playing time if it leads to more wins.
