Bruce Campbell mentioning retirement has created quite a stir online, leading many fans to thank him for everything while wishing him well. Given Campbell’s sense of humor, however, the comments seem to be in jest, and chances are we haven’t seen the last of the B-movie icon on-screen just yet. In any case, Campbell took to Twitter on his 65th birthday to say that, because of his age, it was now “time to retire,” sharing an image of himself as Ash Williams from the Evil Dead universe. The post would garner thousands of retweets and around 100K likes in a matter of hours.

“Okay, so I’m 65 today,” Campbell says in his tweet. “Time to retire, I guess. Thanks for watching!”

“Happy Birthday!” one reply reads. “Thank you for all the entertainment over the years! I hope you still remain active on Twitter!”

Not quite sure how to take the announcement, another response notes, “Happy Birthday, Bruce! I hope the retirement comment is just a joke. If not, thank you for all the memories!”

Meanwhile, others aren’t quite so willing to let Campbell retire so easily. That includes famous fan Stephen King, who wrote in all caps with his response, “DON’T YOU DARE!”

If Campbell has truly retired, it would have been a very sudden decision, as he’s been active as an actor while recently teasing new projects to come. After appearing in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness last year, he more recently teased that he’ll be returning in the MCU to further expand upon his character, who’s not quite what he seems.

“Well, if you think, for example, that he’s just a Pizza Poppa, I think you’re sorely mistaken, because as we all know, once you get into that multiverse, be very careful,” the actor told /Film. “Perceptions are not what you think they are. Do you think I would’ve signed up for this one stupid little part with a guy with four lines of dialogue? Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. I’ve had long, boring talks with Marvel.”

There will be other projects to come featuring Campbell. It was recently announced that he’d been cast in the Peacock series Hysteria!, which takes aim at the “Satanic Panic” phenomenon of the 1980s. His character in the series is a small-town police chief, and it’s a recurring role.

The groovy one also appeared in a recent episode of the prank comedy show Impractical Jokers. He also had a vocal cameo in the new film Evil Dead Rise. Campbell has also suggested that he’s still up for playing an older version of Superman in a DC Elsewords movie for DC Studios, tweeting an image of the Kingdom Come artwork while noting that he was “DM-ing” his number to the powers that be at DC Studios.

Retired or not retired, let’s just hope Campbell’s 65th birthday is the best one yet for the actor. Happy birthday, Bruce!
