Brock Purdy didn’t have the best game on Saturday night, but he put it all on the line when it mattered most to help the San Francisco 49ers defeat the Green Bay Packers 24-21 in an NFC Divisional round matchup at Levi’s Stadium.
After trailing the Packers 21-14 in the third quarter, Purdy led the 49ers on a perfectly executed touchdown drive with six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter to help San Francisco clinch a berth in the NFC Championship game for the third straight season.
Purdy and the 49ers charged down the field with help from the likes of wide receivers Jauan Jennings and Brandon Aiyuk before star running back Christian McCaffrey charged into the end zone on a six-yard touchdown run for the game-winning score with 1:07 left on the clock.
Purdy finished the game having completed 23 of 39 passes for 252 yards and one touchdown, in addition to rushing for 14 yards. McCaffrey was arguably San Francisco’s best player as he rushed for 98 yards and two touchdowns, in addition to catching seven passes for 30 yards.
After the win, NFL fans were quick to hype up Purdy for putting together a “legacy drive” despite having an off day:
Had Purdy failed to lead the 49ers on a game-winning touchdown drive, the narrative surrounding him would be very different this winter.
The 49ers now await the winner of Sunday’s matchup between the Detroit Lions and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They will host the NFC Championship game next weekend in San Francisco.
