It was just two weeks ago that the San Francisco 49ers were undefeated and seemingly invincible.

And now they’ve lost two games in a row, and there are questions about the quarterback.

San Francisco fell to 5-2 with a 22-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Monday at U.S. Bank Stadium. While poor play from the defense and injury concerns with Trent Williams and Deebo Samuel sidelined are partially to blame, so is Brock Purdy after two horrible throws with the chance to win it in the final minutes.

Nobody was happier to see those throws than Camryn Bynum, who intercepted them both to clinch the win. The second one came after Minnesota missed a field goal on the other end and gave Purdy the chance for redemption.

He certainly didn’t seize that opportunity, and social media was quick to criticize him for the loss:

Purdy’s late interceptions prevented Christian McCaffrey, who was dealing with an oblique injury, from being the hero for the visitors. First, he set an NFL record with a touchdown in a 16th consecutive game on the ground, and then he showed off his versatility with a 35-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter to close the deficit.

The touchdowns were necessary to remain within striking distance because San Francisco’s defense struggled throughout the first half in part because Jordan Addison ripped a 50-50 ball from Charvarius Ward and took a potential interception for a 60-yard touchdown.

To the defense’s credit, it took more of a bend-but-don’t-break approach in the second half and allowed just six points.

That gave Purdy and the offense two different opportunities to win it in the final minutes, but he threw the game-altering interceptions to Bynum and will surely want to burn the tape after rewatching the passes in the coming days.

Two straight losses will put Purdy and the rest of the 49ers under the spotlight when they return home to face the Cincinnati Bengals in their next game.
