Brentford captain Pontus Jansson has hailed Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa for the impact he has had on his journey to the Premier League. The Swede jumped ship and left Elland Road for west London at the end of the 2018/19 season as he watched his former side storm their way to the Championship title.

Jansson then suffered play-off final heartbreak at the hands of Fulham last year but this time around it Brentford’s day to remember.

Now he has cleared up his relationship with Bielsa and paid tribute to the Argentine’s genius, which he claims has rubbed off on Brentford’s approach under the leadership of Jansson.

“That’s probably what’s made me proudest, I saw something in Brentford,” he told Sky Sports when asked if his move to the Bees has now been justified.

“I am so thankful to Marcelo Bielsa for what he taught me at Leeds, he gave me so much knowledge and I actually brought it here with me to Brentford.

“Brentford were so willing to listen to me and my ideas that I took from Bielsa.

“I thank him a lot because he is for me one of the best coaches in the world.

“People think that mine and his relationship is not the best but it is, it’s very good.

“I’m so thankful to him and I love Brentford so much but I must thank him and Leeds.”

Jansson insists he has received huge support from Leeds fans this season now they are in the Premier League.

He claims the Whites still have a special place in his heart…

“I think there’s a big difference this year. Last year there were a lot of Leeds fans against me,” he added.

“This year so many Leeds fans were with me and with Brentford because they are already there and they wanted me to come there.

“I love Leeds, I love Brentford but I also love Leeds.

“Leeds is one of my favourite clubs that I’ve had. I’m so happy and so proud, this means so much to me, it’s like my whole life.

“I may as well go to Sweden and retire. I am so happy.”

Jansson will now prepare for the European Championships with Sweden before he can begin to think about life in the top-flight…
