For the second-straight week, the Oklahoma Sooners were upset in the Big 12. Just one week after blowing a double-digit lead to Kansas State in Norman, the Sooners hit the road to face the Iowa State Cyclones and left with a 37-30 loss.
Iowa State had multiple players step up to the call but running back Breece Hall was perhaps the most impressive player in the game. Hall finished the game with 28 carries for 139 yards and two scores, including one with just 4:06 left to play that put the Cyclones on top for the win.
After the game, Hall’s high school coach from Wichita (KS) Northwest, Steve Martin took to Twitter to share a little bit of love for his former player. In doing so, he called out Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley.
“I remember tellin Coach Riley in my office they were missing out on Breece,” Martin wrote. “2 years in a row he busts their butts! (Wonder) if he remembers that now! He is where he should be! Proud of that kiddo!”
Last year’s battle between these two teams ended in a 42-41 win for Oklahoma, but was a solid game for hall. He carried the ball 18 times in that game for 110 yards. Coming up short appeared to serve as a bit of a motivating factor for Hall coming into this game.
“Yeah, just thinking about it we were just one point short,” Hall said earlier this week. “But we already had motivation because we knew we could have had a better season than what we did. So this offseason, we kind of just regroup got back to work really hard. And then we got introduced to coach Andrews and I think he’s got he’s gotten me personally ready, more than I’ve ever been. I think I’ve seen that in the growth in our team as well. So this offseason, we really work really hard and I think it’s going to show.”
Coming out of Wichita Northwest, Hall was a two-time first-team all-state and all-metro selection and was named Metro Player of the Year as a senior as he helped his team to a runner-up finish in Class 5A with a 12-1 record. Hall rushed for 2,127 yards and 29 touchdowns as a senior and also caught 20 passes for 588 yards and eight touchdowns.
His high school career had already been off to an impressive start asa junior, when he rushed for 2,082 yards and 32 touchdowns at 10.3 yards per carry for a team that was runner-up in Class 5A. Hall also caught 12 passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns. He ended career with 4,516 rushing yards.
Hall was a four-star prospect by 247Sports in the 2019 recruiting class and held offers from in-state schools Kansas State and Kansas, as well as Michigan, Nebraska and others.
