Suella Braverman has returned as Home Secretary less than a week after her dramatic exit from the same role. It comes as new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is appointing his top team today in a Government shake-up.

Ms Braverman’s return comes after the popular figure on the Tory right departed as Home Secretary last Wednesday over a breach of the ministerial code.

The former attorney general said she was stepping down after making a “technical infringement” of the rules by sending an official document from a personal email.

But she made clear a major rift with Liz Truss in her scathing resignation letter.

Referring to the disastrous mini-budget, Ms Braverman wrote: “I have made a mistake; I accept responsibility; I resign.

“The business of government relies upon people accepting responsibility for their mistakes.

“Pretending we haven’t made mistakes, carrying on as if everyone can’t see that we have made them, and hoping that things will magically come right is not serious politics.

“It is obvious to everyone that we are going through a tumultuous time.”

Ms Braverman, a former contender for the Tory leadership, also said she has “concerns about the direction of this Government”, warning that ministers have “broken key pledges” to voters.

And she raised “serious concerns” about the Government’s manifesto commitments including on immigration policy.

It comes after the ex-attorney general backed Mr Sunak in the latest Conservative leadership race, in a major blow to Boris Johnson’s comeback bid.

Ms Braverman wrote in the Telegraph: “I have backed Boris from the start.

“But we are in dire straits now. We need unity, stability and efficiency. Rishi is the only candidate that fits the bill and I am proud to support him.”

Ms Braverman was the first female MP seen entering the door of 10 Downing Street today as Mr Sunak appoints his Cabinet.

Grant Shapps was appointed Business Secretary less than a week after replacing Ms Braverman as Home Secreary.

Jeremy Hunt is set to remain as Chancellor after being parachuted into Number 11 when the mini-budget sparked economic chaos.

James Cleverly and Ben Wallace have also been reappointed as Foreign Secretary and Defence Secretary respectively.

Dominic Raab has once again been appointed as Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary.

Mr Raab was rewarded for his loyalty to Mr Sunak with a return to frontline politics after he was sent packing by Ms Truss.
