Six wins on the trot, all by seriously wide margins, will lift the mood at any footy club — and the Melbourne Storm are back having fun again as they charge up the NRL ladder.
Two defeats in their first three games put the reigning premier in an unusual position early in the season but they’ve flogged the Broncos, Bulldogs, Roosters, Warriors, Sharks and Rabbitohs since then to jump to third on the table.
It appears to have lightened the mood at training by the looks of this vision captured by Fox Sports.
Popular hooker Brandon Smith has never needed an invite to express his love for his teammates but he turned his attention on his coach this week.
The Kiwi picked Craig Bellamy up off the ground before gently guiding him to the deck and pinning him on his stomach.
He even delivered a few quick pumps before finally releasing the 61-year-old mentor.
Smith, 24, is contracted until the end of next season but has seen plenty of speculation about his future this year as Harry Grant looks to be the Storm’s long-term answer in the number nine.
The Bulldogs and Titans have been floated as potential destinations after Smith said he wanted to be a starting hooker.
“I want to play number nine,” he said during the pre-season.
“I’ve found myself becoming accustomed to the 13 jersey, which isn’t a bad thing, the versatility is great, but that’s not what I want to play.
“If I can’t be a nine at this club, I’d love to play nine elsewhere.
“I want to be a long-term number nine and I want to represent my country at number nine and I want to do great things in the game like Cameron Smith has done in the hooker spot.”
