Boston Red Sox trade for catcher Reese McGuire, send Jake Diekman to White Sox

The Boston Red Sox have traded Jake Diekman to the White Sox for catcher Reese McGuire. Boston also will acquire either cash or a player to be named later from Chicago.
McGuire, the 14th-overall pick in the 2013 MLB Draft, is batting only .225 with a .261 on-base percentage, .285 slugging percentage, .546 OPS, nine doubles, 10 RBIs and 12 runs in 53 games (166 plate appearances) this season for Chicago. He has thrown out 31% of base stealers (11-for-36) this season.
The 27-year-old has a .241/.286/.359/.646 line in 194 career games for the Blue Jays and White Sox from 2018-22.
Boston is in sell mode. The Red Sox also are finalizing a trade that would send catcher Christian Vázquez to the Astros for prospects, per reports.
The White Sox will pay the remainder of Diekman’s two-year, $8-million contract, per a source. So the trade erases Diekman’s $4 million average annual value off the books for Boston in 2023. The Red Sox can use that money in other ways as they try to reload and improve the bullpen.
Diekman posted a 4.23 ERA, 4.97 FIP and 1.49 WHIP in 44 outings (38 ⅓ innings) for Boston this year.
