Boston Red Sox trade: Dylan Covey once outdueled Chris Sale at Fenway Park, went one draft pick after ace in 2010

The Red Sox on Tuesday acquired Dylan Covey, a right-handed pitcher who outdueled Chris Sale at Fenway Park in 2018.

Sale dominated against his former team, the Chicago White Sox, on June 8, 2018. The Red Sox ace struck out 10. He allowed just one run, six hits and one walk in 8 innings. He also reached 100.3 mph with his fastball.

But he took the loss because Covey pitched slightly better.

Covey hurled 6 innings, allowing no runs, three hits and one walk while striking out seven. He led Chicago to a 1-0 victory in front of 36,593. The game took only 2 hours, 24 minutes.

The only run came in the top of the seventh when Trayce Thompson singled to left to knock home Kevan Smith.

At the time, Sale’s 100.3 mph fastball was the the fastest pitch he ever had thrown as a major league starting pitcher. He set a new personal best later that month when he reached 100.5 mph (June 24, 2018) against the Seattle Mariners.

Another interesting way Covey and Sale are linked? Covey was selected one pick after Sale in the 2010 MLB Draft. Covey went 14th overall to the Milwaukee Brewers but he did not sign. Sale went 13th overall to the White Sox in 2010.

Covey picked college over signing with the Brewers. He pitched at the University of San Diego before signing with the Athletics as a fourth round pick in 2013.

Covey also threw hard when he outdueled Sale, but not quite as hard as the Red Sox ace. He threw 52 two-seam fastballs, averaging 93.6 mph and topping out at 95.5 mph, per Statcast. He mixed in 15 sliders, 13 curveballs and three changeups.

In 2019, Covey threw his two-seamer 35.5%, his cutter 21.8%, his changeup 18.2%, his four-seamer 14.5% and his curveball 9.7% (Statcast). His 1/4 ttwo-seamer averaged 94.5 mph and his four-seamer 94.3 mph.

He is 6-29 with a 6.54 ERA, 5.56 FIP and 1.60 WHIP in 63 career games (45 starts).
