Boston Red Sox score 5 runs in 8th inning for comeback win over Yankees after being no-hit by Domingo Germán through 7 innings

BOSTON — The Red Sox did to the Yankees on Sunday exactly what the Yankees did to them the day before.
Yankees starter Domingo Germán carried a no-hitter into the eighth here Sunday at Fenway Park, but Alex Verdugo broke it up when he doubled to lead off the inning. That was the beginning of a five-run eighth-inning that lifted Boston to a 5-4 victory here at Fenway Park.
Boston’s rally came after righty Nathan Eovaldi shut down the Yankees for 7 innings, but then New York scored four runs in the eighth for a 4-3 comeback victory Saturday.
Germán left the game after Verdugo’s double. Jonathan Loaisiga replaced him and allowed an RBI double to Hunter Renfroe and an RBI single to Christian Vázquez.
Franchy Cordero then followed with a single and Kiké Hernández’s RBI double made it 4-3.
Lefty Zack Britton replaced Loaisiga and he gave up an RBI fielder’s choice to Kevin Plawecki who pinch hit for Jarren Duran. That tied the game 4-4.
Hernández then scored the go-ahead run on Xander Bogaerts’ RBI sac fly to right field.
Germán did not pitch in 2020 while serving an 80-game domestic violence suspension. He recorded four strikeouts in the seventh because Xander Bogaerts reached on a passed ball by Gary Sanchez after striking out. he entered 4-5 with a 4.71 ERA in 19 outings (16 starts) this season.
Red Sox vs. Blue Jays
The Red Sox will open a four-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday. RHP Nick Pivetta (8-4, 4.37 ERA) will start for Boston. Toronto has not yet announced its starter.
