Borussia Dortmund vs Man City highlights and reaction as Riyad Mahrez misses penalty but Blues win group

Mahrez #Mahrez

Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund played out a goalles draw in their penultimate Champions League group game – both securing the results needed to guarantee European football in the New Year.

City booked a place in the last-16 after drawing at Copenhagen last time out, and need just a point to top the group as they are three points ahead of Dortmund, with head-to-head records deciding placings should teams finish level. City beat Dortmund in the home fixture after John Stones’ thunderbolt cancelled out Jude Bellingham’s opener, before an acrobatic Erling Haaland finish earned three points.

Haaland started at the Westfalonstadion, with Stefan Ortega making his competitive debut in place of Ederson, and after an under-par first half Haaland was replaced at half-time. City had the best chance to win the game when Riyad Mahrez missed a penalty, but the winger stepped up and missed his spot kick, with the game ending goalless.

There were cheers at full-time as Dortmund secured the point needed to qualify for the last-16 after Sevilla beat Copenhagen, and City know next week’s home clash with Sevilla will have nothing riding on it.

Guardiola confirms Haaland ‘fever’

This is what Pep Guardiola had to say to BT Sport:

“We played much better second half, in the first half we lost some balls to concede counter attacks, they are so fast. We suffer for the fact our game on Saturday was so demanding physically. The trip, we are a little bit tired. We achieved what we wanted. Top of the group again, one more year. Qualified, in the last 16, all good.

“Erling had a bit of fever before the game, Joao as well and he has a kick on his foot. I saw him tired, Joao as well, That’s why we change it. In that period we struggle a lot.”

Half time message:

“Make long possessions, they don’t want to press high. When it happens they want to push the balls and run. We adjust a little bit our pressing. In the first half we had a lot of problems in our left side. We did it long possessions, apparently they thought the result a draw was good for them, for us as well. That’s why we are there.”

On Mahrez’s penalty miss:

“We will see, of course it’s a problem, since I was here we miss 25 penalties, most in the Champions League. It’s not good enough. Always I admire the courage, take responsibility to do it. But it’s a problem, we miss a lot of penalties. We miss in Copenhagen, here. We have to improve. Otherwise the little details or margins in this competition is the difference. I admire the courage, last season Riyad scores a lot in big moments, here in the semi-finals was important. I admire the courage, if he feels it next time he’s going to take it, but of course he’s got to improve.”

Player Ratings

Ortega: A shock pick but was in the right place to keep out the underwhelming efforts that came his way. 7

Cancelo: City’s plan was to exploit the space behind Adeyemi, but Cancelo making so many wrong decisions saw them frequently undermined at the back. 3

Stones: Struggled with Dortmund’s offensive line but enjoyed pushing forward in the second half. 6

Dias: A return to form for Dias, who was City’s best line of defence in the first half when they were under siege. 7

Ake: Dortmund had all kinds of joy down their right flank with Ake and Cancelo. Improved performance from left-back. 5

Full time – City win the group

Not much to shout about in that game, which can be characterised as ‘Job Done’.

City came to secure the point needed to win the group with a game to spare, and the earlier result in Sevilla meant that Dortmund are also through to the last-16 with this point.

The Blues can now go into Saturday’s fixture at Leicester knowing the following Champions League visit of Sevilla has nothing riding on it for either side.

Three minutes added

Dortmund send in a free kick and the offside flag goes up.

Palmer replaces Mahrez

Another underwhelming night for Riyad Mahrez.

Gundogan over the bar

Riyad Mahrez crosses for Ilkay Gundogan, who fires over. The flag then goes up against Mahrez.

Grealish finally comes on

City win a corner and Jack Grealish replaces Phil Foden.

For Dortmund, Youssoufa Moukoko goes off for Anthony Modeste and Marius Wolf replaces Thorgan Hazard.

Inevitable feel to this game

City need a point to win the group, Dortmund need a point to progress. It feels like both sides are happy to take minimal risks knowing a draw suits everyone. There’s little attacking intent on show, and City are in possession mode as they knock the ball around to see if an opportunity arises, rather than forcing the issue.

Jack Grealish is waiting to come on, but the game hasn’t stopped for a few minutes now.

Not great reading for Mahrez

Akanji booked

Adeyemi fires at goal from 25 yards. It hits Manuel Akanji on the arm about a yard away, and it’s a free-kick. Amazingly, it’s also a yellow card – although where Akanji was meant to put his arm, and then get it out of the way, is a mystery.

Donyell Malan replaces Adeyemi.

Gundogan straight at Kobel

Ilkay Gundogan shoots straight at Gregor Kobel from a tight angle. There’s not much more he could have done with that.

Then Alvarez shoots on the turn to force Kobel into a better save, but Phil Foden can’t make anything of the rebound.

Haaland wouldn’t have missed it

Say what you like about Haaland’s first half but there’s little doubt he’d have buried that penalty. Instead, it’s two misses in a row for Mahrez and you wonder how he can continue to get picked for big games when he keeps playing like this.

Gundogan booked

Ilkay Gundogan stops a Dortmund attack and collects a booking immediately after the penalty save.

Penalty saved!

Riyad Mahrez goes left. So does the goalkeeper.

The Westfalonstadion erupts.

Penalty to City!

Phil Foden gets in behind and his cross comes to Riyad Mahrez. He takes a touch and welcomes a stupid challenge from Emre Can to win a stonewall penalty.

52′ – BVB 0-0 CityJoe Bray

Chaos in the area

Dortmund have about three chances to score as the ball ricochets around the box. In the end, Stefan Ortega dives on the ball and the flag goes up for offside, much to City’s relief.

At the other end, Phil Foden scoops an effort over. Kevin De Bruyne and Jack Grealish are also warming up.

49′ – BVB 0-0 CityJoe Bray

Already better from City

Phil Foden wins a corner, and City have immediately made a better start to this half.

With Manu Akanji on and Joao Cancelo off, Guardiola has solved two issues from the first half as Cancelo was on a booking and leaving plenty of space open on the left, while John Stones wasn’t looking comfortable on the right.

Now Nathan Ake is left, Stones is back in the centre, and that should shore up the defence for the second half.

45′ – BVB 0-0 CityJoe Bray

Haaland replaced

Erling Haaland is off for Bernardo Silva. He was barely involved in that first half, but to take him off at half time is a big decision.

Manuel Akanji replaces Joao Cancelo. Nathan Ake will be the left-back.

Two substitutes coming on

Bernardo Silva and Manuel Akanji will be coming on in the second half.

HT – BVB 0-0 CityJoe Bray

First half stats

City had 66 per cent of possession, but only four attempts on goal and none on target.

Dortmund, meanwhile, have had six attempts with four on target.

It goes without saying, but the Blues will need to be far better in attack if they want to win this game.

Half time

Room for improvement, but as it stands City will top the group tonight, and Dortmund will be through to the last-16 as runners up.

Ake heads over

Phil Foden swings a good ball to the back post. Nathan Ake rises highest, but the header is over.

City free kick

Joao Cancelo is caught by the touchline and City have a free kick in a crossing position as one minute is added.

41′ – BVB 0-0 CityJoe Bray

Another Dortmund chance

Moukoko gets this one on target, but it’s not got enough power and Ortega saves. Another move that came from City giving the ball away, this time it was Rodri.

36′ – BVB 0-0 CityJoe Bray

Should be 1-0 Dortmund

Adeyemi beats the offside trap again and his cross to Youssoufa Moukoko on the penalty spot is perfect. But the teenage striker misjudges it and skews the ball wide from a central position. A golden chance to put his side ahead.

34′ – BVB 0-0 CityJoe Bray

First sighter for Haaland

Moments after giving the ball away, City win it back and Erling Haaland has a chance to shoot on the edge of the area. His former teammates get back well to crowd him out and block the shot before it gets to the keeper.

31′ – BVB 0-0 CityJoe Bray

Yellow for Alvarez

Julian Alvarez catches Thorgen Hazard and collects a yellow card. A little harsh, but he did look to catch Hazard on the ankle as he looked to dart away.
