Borussia Dortmund vs Man City highlights and reaction as Riyad Mahrez misses penalty but Blues win group

Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund played out a goalles draw in their penultimate Champions League group game – both securing the results needed to guarantee European football in the New Year.

City booked a place in the last-16 after drawing at Copenhagen last time out, and need just a point to top the group as they are three points ahead of Dortmund, with head-to-head records deciding placings should teams finish level. City beat Dortmund in the home fixture after John Stones’ thunderbolt cancelled out Jude Bellingham’s opener, before an acrobatic Erling Haaland finish earned three points.

Haaland started at the Westfalonstadion, with Stefan Ortega making his competitive debut in place of Ederson, and after an under-par first half Haaland was replaced at half-time. City had the best chance to win the game when Riyad Mahrez missed a penalty, but the winger stepped up and missed his spot kick, with the game ending goalless.

There were cheers at full-time as Dortmund secured the point needed to qualify for the last-16 after Sevilla beat Copenhagen, and City know next week’s home clash with Sevilla will have nothing riding on it.

Guardiola confirms Haaland ‘fever’

This is what Pep Guardiola had to say to BT Sport:

“We played much better second half, in the first half we lost some balls to concede counter attacks, they are so fast. We suffer for the fact our game on Saturday was so demanding physically. The trip, we are a little bit tired. We achieved what we wanted. Top of the group again, one more year. Qualified, in the last 16, all good.

“Erling had a bit of fever before the game, Joao as well and he has a kick on his foot. I saw him tired, Joao as well, That’s why we change it. In that period we struggle a lot.”

Half time message:

“Make long possessions, they don’t want to press high. When it happens they want to push the balls and run. We adjust a little bit our pressing. In the first half we had a lot of problems in our left side. We did it long possessions, apparently they thought the result a draw was good for them, for us as well. That’s why we are there.”

On Mahrez’s penalty miss:

“We will see, of course it’s a problem, since I was here we miss 25 penalties, most in the Champions League. It’s not good enough. Always I admire the courage, take responsibility to do it. But it’s a problem, we miss a lot of penalties. We miss in Copenhagen, here. We have to improve. Otherwise the little details or margins in this competition is the difference. I admire the courage, last season Riyad scores a lot in big moments, here in the semi-finals was important. I admire the courage, if he feels it next time he’s going to take it, but of course he’s got to improve.”

Not much to shout about in that game, which can be characterised as ‘Job Done’.

City came to secure the point needed to win the group with a game to spare, and the earlier result in Sevilla meant that Dortmund are also through to the last-16 with this point.

The Blues can now go into Saturday’s fixture at Leicester knowing the following Champions League visit of Sevilla has nothing riding on it for either side.

Inevitable feel to this game

City need a point to win the group, Dortmund need a point to progress. It feels like both sides are happy to take minimal risks knowing a draw suits everyone. There’s little attacking intent on show, and City are in possession mode as they knock the ball around to see if an opportunity arises, rather than forcing the issue.

Jack Grealish is waiting to come on, but the game hasn’t stopped for a few minutes now.

Say what you like about Haaland’s first half but there’s little doubt he’d have buried that penalty. Instead, it’s two misses in a row for Mahrez and you wonder how he can continue to get picked for big games when he keeps playing like this.

With Manu Akanji on and Joao Cancelo off, Guardiola has solved two issues from the first half as Cancelo was on a booking and leaving plenty of space open on the left, while John Stones wasn’t looking comfortable on the right.

Now Nathan Ake is left, Stones is back in the centre, and that should shore up the defence for the second half.
