Boris Johnson has been accused of forgetting the name of the Scottish Tory leader after mumbling through a Commons answer in defence of Douglas Ross.

Responding to a barracking from SNP Westminster leader, Ian Blackford, calling for Ross to resign his Westminster seat before standing for Holyrood in May, Johnson appeared to mangle the MP’s name with his Moray constituency.

The PM said: “I think my friend, uh, uh the member for Moray an’ Ross is doing an excellent job of holding the Scottish National Party to account for their manifold failings, not least on education, failing to deliver on crime and failing, in my view, to deliver for the people of Scotland.”

Afterwards SNP deputy leader Keith Brown tweeted: “Murray Ross?”

The SNP director of communications Murray Foote mocked the Prime Minister for forgetting the name of the Scottish Conservative leader.

He wrote on Twitter: “The Prime Minister doesn’t seem to know the name of his Scottish Tory leader, which is tad unfortunate for Moray Ross”.

Following Johnson’s gaffe ‘Murray Ross’ began trending on Twitter with many finding it unbelievable the Prime Minister forgot the name of his Scottish leader.

A Scottish Conservative spokesman said the move was a sign the SNP was worried by the Tories.

The official said: “We are the only party strong enough to fight the SNP and their reckless plan for independence.”
