Ian Hislop clashed with the SNP’s Kirsten Oswald on Question Time as she tried to move the discussion onto Boris Johnson during a debate about Nicola Sturgeon. The East Renfrewshire MP was defending Ms Sturgeon after the First Minister was found to have misled parliament over the Alex Salmond investigation following allegations of sexual harassment. Mr Hislop fired back at attempts from the MP to divert the conversation saying: “Well, he [Boris Johnson] hasn’t lost £500,000 of public money.”

In a tirade defending Scotland’s First Minister, Kirsten Oswald suggested Boris Johnson would not have faired well in front of an inquiry.
She said: “It’s difficult to imagine Boris Johnson putting himself into a position where he is being scrutinised for eight hours.”
But Ian Hislop did not take the attempt to change the subject well.
He responded: “Well, he hasn’t lost £500,000 of public money and given it to Alex Salmond, has he?”

The veteran journalist continued to question Ms Oswald’s line of attack and her attempts to divert the scrutiny away from Nicola Sturgeon.
He argued: “Why are we talking about Boris?
“Can we never talk about Scotland?
“Does it always have to be referred back down here?”

Mr Hislop’s comments come as Nicola Sturgeon was yesterday found to have misled parliament by an inquiry.
The inquiry voted 5-4 against Ms Sturgeon.
The Scottish Government Handling of Harassment Complaints Committee concluded their investigation into Ms Sturgeon on Thursday concluding that Ms Sturgeon gave an “inaccurate” account of a meeting held with Alex Salmond during his live investigation into sexual harassment.
Five opposition MSPs, two Conservative, one Labour, one Liberal Democrat and one independent MSP voted in favour of the inquiry finding while 4 SNP MSP’s voted to defend Sturgeon.

During the inquiry, MSPs did not accuse Ms Sturgeon of “knowingly” breaking the code which would have forced her to resign.
But the outcome has put pressure on the First Minister to resign before the Scottish elections on 6th May 2021.
The damming ruling also cast doubt over the strength of a campaign for a second independence referendum.
Earlier this week the SNP made an application to the Electoral Commission to put the phrases “Vote SNP for IndyRef2” and “Both Votes SNP for IndyRef2” on the ballot paper ahead of the Scottish elections.
