Bombers drop Shiel, Swans regain Papley
Shiel #Shiel
Essendon have dropped star midfielder Dylan Shiel for their clash with the Western Bulldogs, while Sydney will regain gun forward Tom Papley against Brisbane. Shiel, one of Essendon’s senior players since his bumper trade in 2018, collected 26 disposals and six clearances against Collingwood on Anzac Day, but has been omitted for Sunday’s game at Marvel Stadium. Brandon Zerk-Thatcher has also been dropped, along with Nick Hind, who was the medical substitute against the Magpies. Former No.10 draft pick Zach Reid will play his first game of the season, and second overall after glandular fever and foot injuries, while Tom Cutler has been recalled. Both Darcy Parish (ankle) and Jayden Laverde (knee) have been named. For the Bulldogs, Josh Schache joined Jamarra Ugle-Hagan in being omitted from the team that lost to Adelaide. Mitch Wallis returns, and is in the starting 22 for the first time this season, after missing the loss to the Crows for personal reasons. His mother-in-law died just days before Wallis and wife Emily welcomed their second child into the world. Laitham Vandermeer and Roarke Smith also return while Anthony Scott (AFL health and safety protocols) is unavailable. Papley will play his first game after missing the start of the season with a hamstring injury. He booted 43 goals last year and will add extra spark and firepower to the Swans, who have also called upon veteran Sam Reid. Sydney are without Logan McDonald and Paddy McCartin through concussion while James Bell has been dropped. Brisbane are without Kai Lohmann (ankle). In Brodie Grundy and Nathan Kreuger’s absence, Collingwood have turned to debutant Aiden Begg ahead of Mason Cox, with the young ruck-forward joining Tyler Brown in the inclusions against Gold Coast. The Suns dropped Oleg Markov and Jeremy Sharp, while Wil Powell, Josh Corbett and Chris Burgess are out through injury. Jy Farrar, Jack Lukosius, Malcolm Rosas and Darcy Macpherson return.
