Bohm propels Phillies to fifth straight win

Phillies #Phillies

PHILADELPHIA — And Alec Bohm took that personally.

Nick Castellanos stood on second base with no outs in the sixth inning Tuesday night, when the Angels intentionally walked Bryce Harper. It made some sense in that Harper had homered and doubled earlier in the game, and he has been on an MVP-type tear for the past few weeks. But it also put the tying run on base. Bohm smashed a 0-1 changeup off Angels left-hander Tyler Anderson into the left-center-field seats for a go-ahead three-run home run in the Phillies’ 12-7 victory at Citizens Bank Park.

The last Phils player to homer following an intentional walk? You might remember Rhys Hoskins’ three-run homer and iconic bat spike in Game 3 of the 2022 National League Division Series against Atlanta. The Braves intentionally walked Kyle Schwarber to face Hoskins. The last Phillies player to homer following an intentional walk in the regular season? The Pirates intentionally walked Matt Vierling in front of the pitcher’s spot on Sept. 23, 2021. Naturally, pinch-hitter Ronald Torreyes made Pittsburgh pay for its sins.

Bohm was previously 1-for-7 with one RBI, one sacrifice fly and three strikeouts when the batter was intentionally walked before him.

The Phillies hit five homers on Tuesday, giving them an MLB-best 57 homers this month. Schwarber, Bryson Stott and Trea Turner also hit a home run to join Bohm and Harper.
