Bob Baffert’s National Treasure wins 2023 Preakness Stakes: Full results and payouts

Bob Baffert #BobBaffert

The 148th Preakness Stakes belongs to National Treasure.

The Bob Baffert trained horse went wire-to-wire after jockey John Velazquez took a strong break out of the gate from the first position, then held off a late push from Blazing Sevens to cross the finish line by a nose in 1:55.12. Baffert now owns the record for the most Preakness wins with eight.

Kentucky Derby winner Mage finished third.

The victory capped off an awkward return to the Triple Crown for famed trainer Bob Baffert, who was banned from Pimlico Race Course for one year after Medina Spirit tested positive for banned substances following a win at the 2021 Kentucky Derby — which was later vacated. Earlier on Saturday, Baffert’s horse Havnameltdown was euthanized on the track after stumbling around a turn.

Mage went off at 7-5. He was the only horse who ran the 2023 Kentucky Derby to enter the field for the Preakness — making this the only Run for the Black-Eyed Susans since Citation in 1948 with just one Derby entrant.

It was also the smallest field in the starting gate for the Preakness since 1986 as Friday’s scratch of contender First Mission left just seven horses in the running for the $1.5 million purse at Pimico Race Course.
