Bill Maher blasted for being ‘coward-like’ for focusing on Republicans in criticizing elite colleges

Late-night host Bill Maher is being blasted for slamming left-leaning higher education but swapping suddenly to criticize conservative lawmakers.

In Maher’s New Rules segment, he criticized universities like Harvard for producing radical supporters of far-left ideologies, such as hate for Israel. While many conservatives showed support of Maher’s criticism and mocking of elite colleges, many took issue when he began discussing how many elite colleges have alumna like Vivek Ramaswamy, Ron DeSantis, Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Tom Cotton (R-AR), and Supreme Court Justices John Roberts, Clarence Thomas, Brett Kavanaugh, and Samuel Alito, with Maher stating “they all came out of an a**hole factory.”

Among Maher’s critics was Hugo Gurdon, the editor-in-chief of the Washington Examiner, who described his deflection of elite colleges to conservatives as “coward-like.”

“Maher was doing well excoriating the Harvard Left until he started naming names, then suddenly he focused on Republicans,” Gurdon wrote on social media. “You were brave, Bill, until, coward-like, you deflected mockery on to conservatives and away from the tyrannical portion of the ideological spectrum.”

Maher was also criticized in an op-ed piece from Town Hall.

“It’s an edgy segment where the man calls out these institutions for being a-hole factories,” the op-ed read. “Rightfully saying they’re no longer elite, just expensive. But it’s also this point where he must swipe at Republicans, notably the alumni at Harvard and Yale, which was not lost on anyone.”

Maher shared that his criticism of colleges, especially elite left-leaning colleges, stem from how modern college life is a mix of “a day spa” and a “North Korean re-education camp.” The comedian also joked that colleges are just a daycare center where “the toddlers can fire the adults.”

The late-night host also criticized college presidents for not condemning “the worst attacks since the Holocaust,” referring to the Hamas terrorist group attacking Israel on Oct. 7. Since the attack, many college campuses have been the home for rallies against Israel.
