President Joe Biden spoke at the National Safer Communities Summit at the University of Hartford on Friday afternoon, wrapping up remarks focused on gun safety with “God save the queen, man” before exiting the stage.

The closing remarks from the president raised concerns, as Queen Elizabeth II, the United Kingdom’s longest-serving monarch, died in November 2022 at 96.

“Several of you have asked me why he said that. I have no idea. Other poolers likewise have no idea.” Todd Gillman, Washington bureau chief of the Dallas Morning News, said.

Biden’s team tried to deflect the situation.

“He couldn’t do the full ropeline due to weather, and was commenting to someone in the crowd,” principal deputy press secretary Olivia Dalton said in an email.

Biden joked about his age in the speech, a factor Republicans often say will prohibit him from meeting presidential job demands.

“I know many people here who have been impacted by gun violence, lost someone they love, fought so hard for so many years. A lot of you are tired,” Biden said, sparking uproar from the crowd in agreement.

“Try being 110 and doing it again,” Biden added, which brought up laughter from the audience.

Biden was 78 when he was inaugurated in 2021, making him the oldest president in U.S. history to be sworn in, and he will be 82 years old on Election Day in 2024.

Biden addressed Connecticut attendees advocating gun rights, some being victims of gun violence, who are frustrated over the legislature’s failure to implement policies that prevent gun violence.

“If this Congress refuses to act, we need a new Congress,” Biden said.

The country is on track to set a record for mass shootings in 2023, with figures from the Gun Violence Archive showing the highest ever recorded this early in a year.

With gun violence and related deaths rising in the nation, Biden called for a national assault-style weapons ban.

“We will ban assault weapons in this country. We will ban multi-round magazines. We will hold gun makers liable. We will beat the gun industry,” he said at the Connecticut conference, in a state passing strict gun safety legislation this year with the support of Gov. Ned Lamont (D-CT).

Biden is expected to attend a fundraising dinner Friday evening at the home of donor Stephen F. Mandel in Greenwich with Lamont.
