This knock marks a remarkable circle in Stokes’ life, as it was just about 14 months ago that the star all-rounder announced his retirement from the format. The England Test captain reversed his decision last month in order to play in the 2023 World Cup, where he will hope to help the Jos Buttler-led side defend their crown.

Stokes was the star of England’s 2019 World Cup victory with a match-winning knock in the dramatic final against New Zealand at Lord’s.
