Beach excavation uncovers large World War II bomb. Watch it safely explode in Belgium

Excavations on a beach in Belgium uncovered a large armed bomb left from World War II. Video shows the bomb being safely detonated in the sand.

The bomb was found during an ongoing project in Koksijde to make the beach bomb-free, the Belgian outlet Nieuwsblad reported.

The large bomb had about 66 pounds of explosive material, Sky News reported.

The beach was immediately closed to guarantee the public’s safety, the Koksijde Municipality said in a news release May 10. Police and the bomb squad were called in to handle the explosive.

Authorities of the Dovo bomb squad identified the explosive as a British aerial bomb from World War II, the Belgian outlet VRT News reported. The device was about 2 feet long and 10 inches in diameter, officials said.

Video shared by the West Coast Police shows the controlled explosion. A rumbling sound can be heard, and the video shakes slightly when the bomb is detonated. White and brown plumes fill the air as the bomb explodes.

So far, 250 bombs have been safely detonated as part of the project to make the beach bomb-free, VRT News reported. The project is still ongoing.

Koksijde is about 85 miles northwest of Brussels and near the Belgium-France border.
