‘Be concerned’: Sydney suburbs put on urgent Covid notice

NSW Health authorities have urged Sydney residents not to leave their home unless it’s absolutely essential as the state records a new record for daily infections during the latest Covid outbreak. 

Speaking to reporters on Thursday after announcing that NSW recorded 38 new cases to 8pm on Wednesday, Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant again implored people to take the lockdown measures seriously. 

“Every time we leave our home, we need to consider that we may come into contact with someone who has Covid,” she warned.

“It is therefore so critical that we minimise our movements.”

As the Delta strain has moved from the eastern suburbs to western Sydney, Dr Chant singled out a number of suburbs of particular concern at the moment and asked people to come forward for testing. 

The Fairfield local government area is currently worrying health authorities. 

“Places like Bossley Park, Smithfield, Fairfield, Glenfield, West Hoxton Park, Greenacres, St Johns Park, Bonnyrigg, Bankstown, Roselands,” Dr Chant said. 

“In terms of the areas that we are concerned about, we obviously need everyone to be concerned,” she said. 

“It doesn’t mean if you are in a different suburb you don’t have to be worried… you are not immune.”

It comes a day after NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian flagged the potential of harsher measures in certain local government areas such as the Fairfield, Canterbury-Bankstown and Liverpool council areas. 

“We are permitting you to go out but we are asking you to apply the best common sense,” Dr Chant said on Thursday.

“At the moment, if I could see the least possible people out and about over the next 10 days in any indoor settings, I would be very happy.”

NSW Health said 40 Covid patients had been admitted to hospital with 11 currently in the ICU, three of whom are ventilated.

There are 17 people admitted to hospital currently who are under 55 and of those 10 are under the age of 35. One person in intensive care is in their 30s.
