BBC viewers left cringing as Steve Cram makes major Mo Farah blunder

Mo Farah #MoFarah

BBC news presenter Steve Cram sparked fury among viewers on Sunday after he said Mo Farah “should go for a pint” after coming fourth in the Great North Run.

However, his co-star, Paula Radcliffe was quick to correct him, telling him: “I don’t think he’s allowed to.”

Both Paula and Steve were giving their commentary while Mo was greeted by cheers of support following the race.

Steve said: “You know what he should do, I bet he has never done this, he should go and have a pint at the Bamburgh because that’s where everybody meets, or The New Crown.

“It’s a Great North Run experience that people enjoy, anyway where ever he has a pint, you’ve earned it Mo, well done.”

“I am not sure he is allowed a pint,” Paula weighed in before there was an awkward moment of silence.

However, Steve seemed to ignore Paula’s comment as he pointed out “Gabby (Logan) has got him now.”

Mo Farah was named among the 500 most influential Muslims in the world in 2013.

The dominant belief in Islam is that not only is the consumption of alcohol in any of its forms forbidden, but Muslims should avoid even indirect association with alcohol.

The blunder didn’t go unnoticed by viewers, and many took to Twitter to share their thoughts.

@ufarte_lopez said: “Someone should tell Steve Cram that Mo Farah’s a devout Muslim.”

@KarenGeddesQPM asked: “#BBCAthletics How long has Steve Cram known Mo Farah?”

While @AlanLennox_ tweeted: “Steve Cram suggesting a pub change its name for Muslim Mo Farah and suggesting he go for a pint! #GNR.”

@andypaps76 went on: “Why does Steve Cram keep referencing Sir Mo having a beer…. Doesn’t his religion prevent it?? #BBCAthletics #GreatNorthRun.”

“Steve Cram saying hope Mo Farah has a pint now after his career has finished today,” @DailyMoaner_UK commented.

@JonathanOllie added: “Steve Cram telling Mo Farah to get himself away for a pint. Awkward.”

@Roxy_Hart quizzed: “Did Steve Cram just say that Mo Farrah deserves a pint in a pub? Like, Muslim athlete Mo Farrah?”
